About products and suppliers

When it comes to woodworking, symmetry between the parts is as important as the wood itself. For example, a reclining chair with uneven legs may not only be uncomfortable but dangerous, as it will be much more prone to falls and accidents. With a router tool, users can easily replicate pieces from a template or refine the edges of their works with a smoother finish. Different bits can be attached to the tool to achieve the desired result, with the flush trim router bits being some of the most popular.

What are trim router bits?

To put it simply, trim router bits are rotating blades that carve or "rout" through hard materials. One of their most characteristic traits is the ball bearings they have, which provide a guide to the blade when trimming materials. If a user wants to replicate a chair's armrest, for example, the template can be glued or clamped with a piece of wood that has a roughly similar shape and be brought to the router. By pressing the template against the bearing and rolling the wheel alongside its length, the blade below can continuously carve the same shape as the piece above.

Pattern vs. Flush trim router bits

Among the different types of bearing router bits, some of the most well-known are the pattern and flush trim bits. The main difference between the two lies in the position of the bearing. Pattern router bits have the bearing located at the bottom of the blade, which makes for great handheld routers, as the blade will be pointing downward with the bearing parallel to the tool's base, ensuring it will always follow the movement along the piece. A flush-cut router bit is good for table routers, as the bearing is at the end of the blade, which points upward.

Maintenance of flush trim bits

As more and more materials get routed, wood chips, dust, and other particles are generated. If they are not properly cleaned and removed from the blade's components, this can cause the bearing to become stuck or impair its performance. Furthermore, since the user will be more exposed to the blade with a flush trim bit, it's important to use a push block or stick to avoid accidents and safely guide the workpiece around the blade. It's advisable to also not push horizontally on the rotating blade with too much force, as it may cause it to malfunction or detach entirely.
